BUD POWELL: Time Waits (Blue Note)

Bud Powell is considered by many to be one of the greatest pianists in jazz, and rightly so. From bouncy tracks like "Sub City" and "John's Abbey" (alternate takes of both appear on the CD) to the balladry of the title track, there were few musicians who were in the same league. Powell is in fine form throughout the entire disc. The rhythm section--Sam Jones on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums--is brilliant on the disc's mostly midtempo arrangements. Blue Note recently reissued this album in its latest batch of RVG Editions, and it sounds better than ever. Although his most important sessions were behind him by this point in his career, this is the best of Powell's later efforts.
